Star Alliance

To review of global alliances, The Blue Swan Daily brings you a snapshot of Star Alliance. Star Alliance was established in 1997 as the first global airline alliance to “better meet the needs of the frequent international traveller” and is now the world’s largest global alliance. Star Alliance introduced the Connecting Partner Model in Dec-2016 as a partnership concept for regional, low-cost or hybrid airlines to link to the Star Alliance network without full membership. Juneyao Airlines is the launch carrier under the new model, which was implemented on 23-May-2017.

In terms of market share, Star Alliance is the largest global alliance in the world with 18.7% of total seats. Star Alliance includes 28 members from around the globe. In 2017, Star Aliiance partner’s capacity included over 989 million seats, touching 199 countries, 1,356 airports and 6,296 city pairs. With over 2,540 aircraft currently in operation.


SkyTeam

This alliance was established in 2000 by Aeroméxico, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. On 22-Jun-1999, Air France and Delta Air Lines signed an exclusive long-term strategic agreement that laid the foundations for a major global alliance. One year later, the CEOs of Aeromexico, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air met in New York to announce the formation of SkyTeam.

In terms of market share, Star Alliance is the second largest global alliance in the world with 17.3% of total seats. SkyTeam includes 21 members from around the globe. In 2017, SkyTeam partner’s capacity included over 912 million seats, touching 177 countries, 1,173 airports and 4,965 city pairs. With over 3,595 aircraft currently in operation.


Oneworld

The alliance is about to celebrate its 19th anniversary, having formed in Feb-1999. In terms of market share, oneworld is the third largest global alliance in the world with 12.4% of total seats. Oneworld includes 13 full members from around the globe. In 2017, oneworld partner’s capacity include over 655 million seats, touching 153 countries, 1,023 airports and 3,105 city pairs. With over 2,400 aircraft currently in operation, oneworld airlines also have an additional 496 Airbus aircraft on order, along with 366 Boeing and 46 Embraer and Mitsubishi aircraft.
